The mechanic looked at the new machine that was pulled into the yard with a look like a baker watching a pie emerge from an oven. It was a four wheeled car, probably from around 2050. Mostly solid state encased components of course, but with the right tools even those proprietary polymers could be prised open.
The alloys had long since rusted to nothing, and weavers had eaten away a cobweb of lattice marks in the plastic shell. It would be as friable as sugar at this point. But that didn’t matter, because the crucible would be intact. Designed long ago by neural nets, now far too costly to run, the crucible could convert energy into rotational movement with incredible efficiency. A pedal motor adapted to interface with one of these could take on a day’s journey with the same amount of energy it would take you to ride your bicycle down to the market.
